20 years of CANCERactive, Anniversary Sunday Show

20 years of CANCERactive, Anniversary Sunday Show

On Sunday 17th September, to celebrate our 20th birthday, we are going to interview CANCERactive founder, Oxford University Biochemist, Chris Woollams on 'What Integrative Medicine in Cancer means to me' - this is the man who virtually invented and championed the term for the UK. This will be a very big show and is the first of seven shows in seven weeks.

Larry Brooks, Chairman of CANCERactive writes,

“In 2001, Chris responded to his daughter Catherine’s idea that there should be a patient-friendly magazine in Hospitals, full of tips and information, so that people touched by cancer could be involved in their own cancer programme and increase their personal odds of survival. And so Chris launched ICON - Integrative Cancer and Oncology News. It was a real ‘first’. Let’s be honest, there was hardly even an Internet at that time - it was full of PubMed research articles as Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the web, had planned. But Chris put articles on a website, called it CANCERactive, and now people touched by cancer have 4,000 pages of highly trustworthy, well researched information to help them take some control of their own lives and reduce their side effects, manage their stress, heal their microbiome and increase their personal odds of survival,

By 2005, Chris had written the Rainbow Diet based on just one study from Harvard Medical School plus his own experience of the Mediterranean Diet and the French Paradox and the European longevity data! He’d also written his first article on the importance of a healthy gut - 'Mother’s Little Helpers' - for colorectal cancer. His first book on the microbiome came in 2008. He’d also helped organise Britain’s first major Conference on Cancer Prevention in 2004, right opposite the Houses of Parliament, with doctors, oncologists and Members of Parliament present.

By 2010 he was championing HIFU, Hyperbaric Oxygen, using off-label drugs such as Metformin and Atorvastatin, stressing the importance of Melatonin, and vitamin D. He’d spoken in America, Australia, Japan and Moscow on how people could prevent cancer and how patients could take some control over their own personal cancer programme and positively affect their outcomes.  Already Geoff Boycott had lived eight years more than his oncologist predicted, thanks to Chris’ help (it's now 21 years!)

Between 2003 and 2009, Chris actually wrote six books, spoke at the NHS annual conference twice, and was told by the MacMillan CEO that his biggest problem was that both he and ICON, were ‘10 years ahead of their time’ because Oncologists in the UK simply weren’t ready to accept that Integrative Medicine could improve their drugs, surgery or radiotherapy outcomes.

In the second decade of CANCERactive he produced a huge amount of work on the role of stress in cancer, on the benefits of exercise, yoga and meditation, on fasting, off label drugs and supplements. He has also championed less invasive therapies such as Proton Beam Therapy, Ablation, the Nanoknife and Dendritic cell therapy..

He writes and updates probably 500 articles a year - not just for CANCERactive, but on general health topics - from how to reduce cholesterol, to improving sleep, to 'Forest Bathing' on his American website, Chris Woollams Health Watch. Over 40,000 people read one of his websites every week.

And then, of course, he championed 'the Active8 programme' (we will have a separate show on that) and Personal Prescriptions. As radical as it seems, he believes virtually everyone can beat their cancer and that it is reversible, if you build a body - gut outwards - that is conducive to health. We read the emails he receives; his success record is, frankly, quite staggering.

Please forgive this long introduction.

On Sunday 17th, I will be proud to Interview Chris on your behalf and ask him about the motivation and the details of the many integrative therapies you could be using today to improve your personal odds of survival".

This will be a very special interview.
